Punta Trettu Kite Spot
Punta Trettu kite spot is located in the South West Sardinia, in front of the Island of Sant’Antioco and the Island of San Pietro. More precisely, it’s in Loc. Matzaccara inside the town of San Giovanni Suergiu.
This kite spot is becoming more and more famous thanks to the unique benefits that offers to all-levels kiters. Most of all, is perfect for beginners who want to take kitesurfing lessons with granted safety.
Indeed, Punta Trettu is a tongue of sand which reaches the middle of the lagoon created between the mother island of Sardinia and the island of Sant’Antioco. The space into the water is so wide that ensures safety even with a large number of kiters navigating, without any danger.
Anyway, the space is divided into two sections: the left site of Punta is dedicated for freeriders, while the space in front of Punta is for kitesurfing schools and kite lessons.
“Punta Trettu has nothing less than brazilian lagoons: the wind is super steady, the water is flat and shallow. It’s amazing to train here!”
Giacomo Barberi, Italian Freestyle Champion in 2011and founder of the kite school ProKite Sardegna in Punta Trettu
Features of Punta Trettu
The kitesurf spot Punta Trettu has become so famous thanks to its great features:
- Seabeds are shallow and sandy: it allows both freeriders and beginners to stop and stand up anytime they want to, during a session or a kite lesson.
- Water is super clear and flat: it makes waterstarts much easier for beginners and freeriders feel safe while trying some new tricks.
- There are no obstacles around: this wide lagoon does not have any obstacle, so learning and freeriding are safer for everyone. It makes Punta Trettu a kitesurfing paradise in Europe and a mandatory choice for those who want to have the best kitesurf course in Sardinia.
The season in Punta Trettu starts in March and lasts until November, with a mild climate and temperatures between 20 and 35 degrees. The wetsuites we suggest to wear are 5.4mm during March/April/October/November, 3.2mm during June/September and 2.5mm during July and August.
Winds blowing in Punta Trettu
Punta Trettu works mainly with Mistral (NW) and Scirocco (SE), which are the dominant winds all along the season. Thanks to the morphological conformation of the bay and Punta exposed on three sides, the wind enters perfectly inside the lagoon, gaining intensity and remaining always steady and never gusty, since there are no obstacles.
Mistral is the main wind during spring and summer. In bright and shiny days, the thermal effect can let the wind increase its power up to 10 knots more than Windguru or Windfinder forecasts.
Scirocco is the dominant wind of September and October, and it takes advantage too of the thermal effect gaining some power more than what forecast says.
Levanat enters quite goon inside the bay, probably Punta Trettu is the only kite spot working with winds from East.
Libeccio and West enter good sometimes during spring.
Tramontana blows so strong during winter, reaching up to 45/50 knots.
Kite sizes for Punta Trettu
We suggest a range of kites from 9mt to 12mt: normally these sizes cover Punta Trettu’s wind intensity.
At our kitesurf school we store kites from 5mt to 17mt, and they are also available for the rental service – in case of unusual light or strong windy days.
